ZZZZZZZZZ...oh, am I playing?

by deltwalrus , Nov 11 '99
Pros: Pretty scenery, great plotline
Cons: Everything else (interface, difficulty, replay)
Beautiful backgrounds, interesting sounds.

There. That's about all the good things I can say about Riven.

The world that you're supposed to lose yourself in is, once again, almost completely static. It's ironic that the prisons...

Driven to Riven

by smbrannan , Dec 03 '99
Pros: Beautiful, semblance of a storyline
Cons: Can be repetitive, puzzles more trouble than they are worth
Over the 1998 Christmas holidays, I was drawn into the world of Riven. My brother gave it to me as a present, and for the next week or so I spent too much time in front of my Mac into the wee hours of the morning trying to complete this challenge.

It's like walking through an art gallery

by agsteiner , Feb 29 '00
Pros: outstanding pre-rendered images
Cons: stone-age game design
Call me arrogant, but from a game released in the late 1990's I
expect more advanced game mechanisms than from a game released
in the late 1970's. Hardware has evolved a lot during that time,
and I expect software to exploit that power....

thinking game

by SoulReaver , Jan 24 '00
Pros: Good story and Great screen shots.
Cons: Slow load time and Hardly any replay value
Your mission, should you choose to accept it is to find Genn and imprison him in a link book. Sounds easy right? Wrong. Atrus hands you a book in which to imprison Genn, Atrus' father, and sends you to Riven. The puzzles begin. The puzzles are...

Riven is riveting

by rrorgo , Jan 26 '00
Pros: excellent graphics, good story line
Cons: none
Anyone who enjoyed playing Myst will love Riven. The graphics and sound are excellent, and there are many more places to go and puzzles to solve. The different places to go are extremely realistic! It's more challenging than myst was, but that adds to...

I expected something better...

by box543 , Jun 01 '00
Pros: great graphics
Cons: boring gameplay
Riven was visually interesting and had some fun scenes, but I got bored after a couple hours and never did finish it. I got the game because I like intellectual puzzle games and I'm not a big fan of shoot-em-up games. I had heard good things about Myst...

Livin' In A Riven World

by scat68 , Dec 14 '99
Pros: Amazing graphics and animations, captivating game.
Cons: Need a lot of computer speed and power to really utilize the game to its fullest.
If you were really into Myst, you will be captivated by its sequel, Riven. But be forewarned, this game will draw you in and it is not for the "quickie" gamer who wants instant results or solutions to clues. It is, needless to say,...

Oh my god...

by Stellerband , May 09 '00
Pros: uh... nice graphics
Cons: It was boring
What the hell!? Why did this game turn into a sequel? This first one couldn't hold anyone's attention to save its life. These kind of games really bother me for several reasons. The first is that the target audience doesn't have enough time to play this...

Riven is Riveting

by kate_fleet , Jan 07 '01
Pros: Amazing Graphics
Cons: Some puzzles are very hard
You couldn't have a better follow up to Myst. Usually sequels let you down a bit. Everyone loves the first one, but when it comes to number two, most of the time its disappointing. With Riven this is simply not the case.
Whether you play by yourself...

Maybe it is just me

by oldiphn1Tim412 , Jan 13 '00
Pros: nice scenery, although very tempting to try and make your character jump the cliffs in frustration
Cons: lots. see above.
I was encouraged by a friend to purchase this game a while back. To this day, I wish that I hadn't. Maybe it is just me, but I figured out...let's see...oh, about two minutes worth of stuff to do, and then I couldn't figure out what to do next. Now, I...

Fun, worth a try

by MajestikStar , Dec 04 '99
Pros: Good graphics, fun, once you have finished it you feel like you have really accomplished something.
Cons: On the tough side
If you enjoyed Myst then you will love Riven. I found both games to be a bit difficult but still I enjoyed it. It isnt an easy game, however, it is something that you will have to work hard at. It took me a few weeks to finish it and I worked about an...

Tough but Good

by MarPidge , Dec 01 '99
Pros: challenging
Cons: slow moving at first
Riven has the most amazing graphics, especially during sky car rides between islands. The basic format of the game is a series of interconnected puzzles. One great thing about Riven is that it is not played linearly; one puzzle does not have to be...

Riven is not riveting.

by Kimber_333 , Feb 09 '00
Pros: Pretty scenery.
Cons: Too complicated and not enough instruction.
I am not a true hard core gamer, but I know my way around the game worlds. I have played some of the best quest games. Riven didn't even come close. When we first loaded the game, we were impressed with the quality of graphics and loved the scenery....

OMG

by frst_sgt , Dec 25 '99
Pros: Graphics
Cons: Everything else
This has got to be the worst game that I have ever had the misfortune to play. The game is bad all around. If there is one thing that I saw that was good with this game is the graphics. I could only last through the first disc before I decided to do...

If you can't sit still this games NOT for you.

by red_49er , Dec 29 '99
Pros: The graphics are great, and it is a real challenge.
Cons: Takes a lot of patience, and easy to get lost.
Riven is not your normal run of the mill game. Be ready to try your patience and keep a note book and pencil handy. You can easily get lost in the many gardens, caves, and walkways. If you don't keep track of where you are you will never know where...
